Wife on the Roller Coaster over at Riding the Roller Coaster is hosting a military spouse blog hop, so I figured I’d dust off my own personal lily pad for new visitors as they bounce from one milspouse blog to the next. Welcome!
The Short Version: I’m a geeky Jewish Navy wife with two cats and no kids. I like to cook, fly, read science fiction and fantasy, and drink martinis (provided that there are no pilots playing dice games involved).
My world is defined in large part by two big N’s. N the First is the Navy: I’ve been married to my Naval Aviator for three years and change, but the Navy has been a part of our lives for much longer. We started dating when I was sixteen (I know, I know…), and we liked each other enough that we kept at it through his four years at the Naval Academy while I completed my studies at a school other than that quaint little engineering college in Annapolis.
The subject of my studies leads nicely into N the Second: Nerdiness. I am a great, big, proud, unabashed geek, and no one can talk to me for more than five minutes before they figure out that I was probably never one of the cool kids. That didn’t bother me too much, as I had Star Trek, Dune, text-based online Dragonriders of Pern roleplaying games, LEGO, C.J. Cherryh, Terry Pratchett, computer programming, and Harry Potter to keep me company. In college, I couldn’t decide which of my academic geekdoms meant more to me, so I wound up with a distinctly odd double major in Computer Science and Religion.
These days I’m involved in the Civil Air Patrol, in which I have trained to conduct search and rescue missions as a member of the aircrew. I am hoping to begin flight training towards my own private pilot certificate this summer, so there will be a whole lot of aviation going on in this family. Later on, some of my husband’s part of the flying equation will take place somewhere far away as we muddle through our first deployment.

my husband wants so bad to get his pilots license. It’s just so expensive…it would be neat though.
It’s definitely not cheap, but there are ways to make it a little less painful with some careful planning. There are even scholarships for which one can apply, and you can bet I’ll be trying for that when I start getting spooled up with my training!

*laughs* My husband can quote Top Gun backwards and forwards, and according to his parents, has been able to do so since age five. Perhaps I’m biased, but I think my guy looks better in a flightsuit than Tom Cruise ever did. ;-D

hola from the hop! i talk to you on twitter but its so nice to get to know even more about you! I didnt realize you went to school in annapolis… Im from MD, south of annapolis and went to college in baltimore. Annapolis is by far, one of the prettiest spots in the state.
Howdy! Actually, my husband was the only one who went to a little engineering college in Annapolis; I went to a small school in Virginia. I do, however, have very fond memories of Annapolis from my visits over the course of his Academy career. (In some ways, I’m sure they’re fonder than those of my husband, who had a few things to distract him from the beauty of the area.) I’m working on him, though — we went back for a Navy football game last fall, and I think he appreciates the campus a great deal more now that he doesn’t have to live there. 😉

As for the picture, thank you so much! The day my husband got winged was one of the highlights of our time with the Navy thus far (heck, and of our lives in general). If you can believe it, I took quite a few pictures that day.
* I do not deny that may do this from time to time, but the effect is perhaps not so much impressive as… amusing.
Not to sound completely weirded out, but I having a feeling we share more than a pension for blogging. Perhaps in the notion of living in the mecca of Norfolk, VA. Two words: Small world. Especially when I’m a hermit who barely leaves her home for the grocery store because I need more eggs to hard boil.
Well, at least now I can rest assured knowing I’m not the only soul in the area.

Howdy, Michy. 🙂 Oh, Wheel of Time… I have a love/hate relationship with that series. I thought the first four books in the series were quite strong, but I couldn’t muster up sufficient interest to continue after the sixth or seventh — I never could shake the feeling that he was writing the same book over and over without enough of the compelling plot development that marked the earlier volumes.
Did the pace ever improve in later books? I’ve heard mixed things. When the series is complete, though (and I was sad to hear of Robert Jordan’s death before he could finish the final installment himself), it is possible that I’ll find my way back and slog through the middle books in hopes of eventually reaching some sort of satisfying conclusion.

They did! I’m actually re-reading the series now, because I found out that his family & friends released the next book in the series. I’m currently on The Crown of Swords, which is the book that is probably the slowest in the series. During my first read-through, I pushed through this phase and found the next books to be much better – more on par with the first few. Overall, though, I was too addicted to the series to give it up. 🙂
I just joined in on the blog hop and your blog definitely caught my attention. I’m looking forward to reading a lot of people’s blogs, but I find it rare to run into someone who has some of my “weird” stuff in common. For example, I have no kids, and a house full of cats. I seem to be one of the few with no kids and no dogs. My husband’s also a Naval Aviator and an Academy graduate. Hubby and I both are full blown nerds, full of lots of geekiness so I am definitely looking forward to reading more from you!
